Halloween in Austin

"Trick or Treat"

"Trick or Treat"

It’s been years since I did anything for Halloween, let alone have treats for trick-or-treaters.  This year would be an exception.  House rules state that the external lights need to be on for security, so that means the kids will be stopping by.  The solution was to set out a candy-filled bowl filled on a milk crate with a sign that read “Take what you want, leave the bowl.”

Expecting some kid to empty the bowl into their bag, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the kids were very good and took a portion leaving some for others.  There were even 4 Tootsie Roll Pops left after it was all over.

We gave the squirrels a treat too, scattering a bag of unsalted peanuts in the back yard.  A short while later, two grackels showed up and tried to break into some of the peanuts.  Then a little black kitty wandered into the yard for a go.  While I was taking pictures of the kitty, he decided to investigate the person behind the glass and advanced toward the patio for a quick peek before dashing off out of the yard. We expected a black squirrel to show up next since the first three “trick-or-treaters” were black animals. Later we saw on television where there was a black squirrel caught on video.

The kitty brought a little friend back to raid bread crumbs left out for the birds.  Since it is against house rules to have pets, it is also not advisable to feed strays.  So we held off on supplying the birds with more bread crumbs for a few days so the kitties would get  the idea that this was not a regular occurrence and look elsewhere for their raids.  They appear to be about 7-8 months old at this time, and they have been spotted elsewhere around the neighborhood.  Although they are a bit skittish, hopefully they are someone’s pets and not strays.
