Flora along Lady Bird Trail

Along the dusty trail

Along the dusty trail

My interest in botany began at an early age.  After a disappointing employment contact many years ago, I spent many hours studying botanical books.  I knew the local flora and many of the cultivars already provided by the local nurseries in Longview, Washington since I was very young.  However, the shock of being told that I “didn’t know anything about plants” was enough for me to turn to research.  I was determined to learn more than that nursery employee or their supervisor ever knew.  I’m sure that I have more than enough volumes of information gathered on the subject to back the claim up.

Although I have pushed the research aside for other educational pursuits, my botanical curiosity has never faded and I love to take photos of the interesting species I find along life’s journey.  Lady Bird Trail in Austin provides an interesting array of native and cultivated plants for discovery.  The zoom on my mobile camera allows me to get some rather close and detailed images of the flora I have seen.

Since most of my research is buried in many computer files or boxed up in storage back in Washington, I am finding myself looking for new information on the local varieties and species in Austin. Many cultivars grown here are hardy in the arid climate and the extreme range of temperatures from triple digit summers to sub-freezing winters. For now I will loosely identify the plants by family, genus, or interesting detail (until I have reopened my research files and can provide proper identification).
